PM Marković completed his visit to Bulgaria: Firm support for Montenegro and misunderstanding for non-European behaviour of some of neighbours

Sofia, Bulgaria (28 February 2020) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković completed earlier today his official visit to the Republic of Bulgaria, attending the meetings with Speaker of the National Assembly Tsveta Karayancheva and President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev, with assessment of confirmed strong support for our country in European integration and the open perspectives of even stronger bilateral relations between the two friendly countries.
"Indisputably, all the officials, namely President of the Council of Ministers Borissov, Speaker of the Assembly Karayancheva and President Radev have given firm support to Montenegro on its EU bid, expecting a new negotiating approach to be encouraging and Montenegro to be the first next member of the European Union," Prime Minister Marković told our reporters, at the end of his visit.
The meetings also discussed issues that should enhance our economic relations, particularly the tourism, energy and agriculture, the Prime Minister stated.
"We have signed agreements in health and in culture, and today we have agreed to reach a common agreement in education pretty quick. At the same time, regarding these economic issues, we put the focus on establishing an air link between Sofia and Podgorica, i.e. Varna and Tivat for the season," Prime Minister Duško Marković pointed out.
All the meetings also discussed specific activities within the Berlin Process, chaired by Bulgaria this year and in that area the focus was on infrastructure development, infrastructure linking and cooperation within the energy sector, acknowledging that Montenegro is now a regional energy hub, the Prime Minister added.
Asked by Montenegrin Television to comment on how Bulgaria, as a member of NATO and the European Union, but also a majority Orthodox country, views the protests organised in Montenegro on the adoption of the Law on Freedom of Religion or Belief and the Legal Status of Religious Communities, since President of the Council of Ministers Borissov mentioned that at the press conference, the Prime Minister noted this was also a topic, he discussed with President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev.

"Bulgaria is following what is happening in Montenegro, they misunderstand the non-European behaviour in the region, regarding the Montenegrin sovereign right to decide on internal matters. They do not understand the attitude of neighbours, regarding the invitation for President Djukanović to visit Sarajevo. It was simply noted that Montenegro has the right to regulate the issue of freedom of religion and position of religious communities in its own way, in line with the Constitution and any interference with these issues is unwholesome, non-European and not neighbourly. Such support is especially significant, as it comes from Bulgaria - a member state of the European Union, NATO member state and an Orthodox country. We are encouraged by this attitude, the attention focused towards Montenegro and on this occasion, the support that Montenegro has received. President Radev also pointed to his own experience in adopting their Law on freedom of religion, which was launched on President Radev's initiative. So this conversation has shown that Montenegro is on the right path. I, of course, sent guarantees that Montenegro will tackle this challenge in a European and democratic way for the benefit of both, the state and its citizens," Prime Minister Duško Marković concluded.
