Podgorica, Montenegro (28 February 2020) -- Flights from Montenegro to the north of Italy, i.e. to Milan and Bologna, are temporarily suspended from Saturday (29 February 2020), in order to prevent spread of the coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

On the proposal of the Institute of Public Health, the Ministry of Health issued an order on temporarily travel ban from Montenegro to northern Italy, due to the current epidemiological situation prevailing in the northern Italy. The prohibition order was issued, in order to prevent the importation of infectious diseases to Montenegro, its control and transmission to other countries, why flights from Montenegro to the airports in Milan and Bologna and vice versa are temporarily suspended, General Director of the Directorate for Public Health at the Ministry of Health Dr. Miro Knežević stated, highlighting this was a preventative measure, aimed at detaining the coronavirus of importation to Montenegro.

Four airlines (Montenegro airlines, Al Italy, Wizz Air and Ryanair) are flying from Montenegro to Italy, towards three destinations, namely Milan, Bologna and Rome, Director of the Airports of Montenegro Danilo Orlandić, stated.

The temporary measure passed by the Ministry of Health, which we are obliged to respect, suspends flights to Milan and Bologna, which means that the line to Rome is further operating in normal traffic, Director Orlandić noted.

Director of the Institute of Public Health Dr. Boban Mugoša clarified that the Institute had made an estimate of the risk, regarding the epidemic of novel coronavirus in northern Italy.

Bearing in mind, that we have direct air links with Italy and that a large number of passengers are arriving at these planes, the probability of the virus importation to Montenegro is great. Based on the conclusions of the National Coordination Body for Communicable Diseases (26 February 2020), the Institute suggested passing the decision on delaying travel to these areas for citizens of Montenegro, Dr. Mugoša pointed out.

The Sanitary Inspection will continue to put passengers at Podgorica Airport, under medical supervision, due to the connections between flights from Italy via Rome and other European destinations, Chief Health and Sanitary Inspector Višnja Orban highlighted. "We urge passengers traveling from Milan via Rome, Budapest or Tirana to inevitably contact the border police or sanitary inspection, for putting them under medical supervision," Orban noted.
