DPM Pažin: We appreciate USA's support for Montenegro's commitment to Western democratic values of civil society

We greatly appreciate the understanding and support of the United States of America for Montenegro's determination to build its future on Western democratic values and the civic concept of society, said Deputy Prime Minister Zoran Pažin during a meeting with US Senator Ron Johnson in Washington, D.C.

DPM Pažin, who is paying a working visit to the United States this week, thanked Senator Johnson for the great support the United States is providing to Montenegro in strengthening the rule of law and developing democratic institutions, as a guarantee of a higher quality of life for all its citizens.

"Montenegro is determined to resolve all internal issues through democratic dialogue, safeguarding and reinforcing its core values of a state of free and equal citizens of different faiths and nations," the Deputy Prime Minister emphasised.

DPM Pažin stressed that Montenegro today shows that it has the strength and wisdom to not only overcome current misunderstandings on the Law on Freedom of Religion through dialogue, but also to bring together all advanced social forces to implement the necessary reforms as soon as possible and gain a place in the community of the most developed European countries.

He estimated that the Law on Freedom of Religion, which meets the highest standards of human rights and freedoms and is the most liberal law in our region, guarantees equal rights to all religious communities, but also obliges everyone to respect the legal order of Montenegro equally.

The Law, he added, endangers only those who see their interest in spreading ethnic and religious tensions and instability in the Balkans.

"Current attempts to abuse the religious sentiment of a part of Montenegrin citizens to undermine the core values of multiethnic and multireligious Montenegro show that the spirits of the 1990s are still living in the minds of individuals from Montenegro and the region," the Deputy Prime Minister said.

Senator Johnson emphasised that Montenegro has a constructive and positive role in fostering good relations with its neighbours in the region, stressing that Montenegro has many potentials and that it has made crucial progress by joining NATO.

"I am a big supporter of Montenegro and Montenegrins. Each country faces some challenges, but there is really a lot of potential in Montenegro. I was involved in Montenegro's accession to NATO. This is obviously a key point in Montenegro's progress, which was certainly equal to the task and has been cooperating with us," the Senator said.

He said he particularly appreciated the fact that Montenegro and Kosovo had been able to resolve their border dispute.

"This is a good example and I believe it helped to conclude the Prespa Agreement, and I hope it will help other countries in the region to resolve their disputes as well," Senator Johnson said.
