PR ServiceThe top priority of the Government of Montenegro is to implement reforms that raise the quality of life of citizens and fulfill the obligations for membership in the European Union, thus showing that Montenegro deserves to be recognised as a role model for other countries in our region following the pro-European course, said Deputy Prime Minister Zoran Pažin during a meeting in Washington with Congresswoman Chellie Pingree and Senators Ben Cardin and Susan Collins.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that Montenegro is guided by its Western democratic values in conducting its state policy, which is why it is today a full member of NATO and on its way to become the first next member of the European Union.

Congresswoman Pingree, who is the Co-chair of the Montenegrin Caucus in the US Congress, stressed the importance of the visit of DPM Pažin for a better understanding of the challenges facing Montenegro, as well as for providing information on the positive developments in the country. "We are here to support your country and safeguard its democratic values, especially in your region, and look forward to new opportunities to help you," she stressed.

By implementing the Law on Freedom of Religion, DPM Pažin explained, after 14 years of independence, Montenegro will finally introduce the rule of law in the area regulating relationship between the state and religious communities, affirming the civic concept of a modern state based on the rule of law, respect for diversity and freedoms of all citizens, regardless of religious and national affiliation.

Senator Cardin welcomed Montenegro's responsible role and contribution, as a US partner and NATO member, in maintaining international peace and stability, and in particular in promoting Western democratic values in the Balkans.

Senator Collins condemned the disinformation campaign that Montenegro is exposed to, expressing support for Montenegro's determination to base its further development on Western democratic values.

DPM Pažin stressed that Montenegro is determined and absolutely capable of resisting all destabilisation attempts, expressing confidence that the dialogue that began with representatives of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral will provide answer to misunderstandings in resolving this internal issue of Montenegro and put an end to all attempts to abuse the religious sentiments of citizens.

Furthermore, the meeting of DPM Pažin with US officials discussed the dialogue the Government is having with representatives of civil society and media in Montenegro. The Deputy Prime Minister said that this dialogue, initiated by Prime Minister Marković, shows that there are serious progressive forces in the Montenegrin society that are ready to cooperate with the Government and create new value in the interest of Montenegro's European future, regardless of differences.
