Response of Montenegrin MFA regarding statement by Russian MFA spokesperson

The Law on Freedom of Religion is part of every domestic legal order and the exclusive right of national legislation of every independent and free state. Although there are no clearly codified international standards in this area, Montenegro has, without obligation to do so, prepared, agreed and adopted this Law through the consultation and the assistance of the Venice Commission, that is, with the consent of the most respected European and global authorities regarding these issues.
It is therefore completely inexplicable and utterly unconvincing that the adoption of a law, identical or very similar to any law of this type in any secular democratic state, and enacted in the aforementioned way, in a small country in the Western Balkans, could have "worldwide significance, echo and impact on the global unity of the Orthodox world", as claimed in a statement by the spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is even less clear that it is possible that such and similar statements, in the period before and after the adoption of the law, were not considered as interference in Montenegro's internal affairs.
The head of Montenegro, as Ms. Zakharova suggests did, indeed, a 180 degrees turn, towards the values of the European and Euro-Atlantic community, and that is probably the core reason for - hopefully transient - incomprehension.
