Montenegro has shown regional and broader leadership when it comes to responding to the global threat posed by the spread of coronavirus. "Your action on two tracks, through decisive health and safety measures and through well-thought-out economic measures and recommendations, deserves respect," said UN Resident Coordinator to Montenegro Fiona McCluney at a meeting with Prime Minister Duško Marković.
Prime Minister Marković said that solidarity undoubtedly resides in the United Nations, as well as other universal values that serve humanity's well-being, noting that Montenegro will always follow them in every situation.
Fiona McCluney and Head of the World Health Organisation Country Office in Montenegro Mina Brajović said at the meeting that the UN system in cooperation with the WHO, which is the leader in responding to this pandemic, is at Montenegro's disposal for expert and any other assistance. In this context, an appropriate national Preparedness and response plan in accordance with the UN rules needs to be adopted as soon as possible so that our country can use the resources of the WHO and other international organisations to help combat the epidemic and remedy its social and economic consequences.
The Prime Minister said that Montenegro needs the expertise, analytics and knowledge offered by the UN and WHO, but that this moment implies concrete financial, material and technical assistance, which Montenegro will make the best use of. Marković gave instructions for the establishment of an operational interdepartmental body that will prepare the national Plan and nominate it through the WHO Country Office. Bearing in mind the importance of the Plan, the body will be headed by Deputy Prime Minister Milutin Simović.
