Podgorica, Montenegro (24 March 2020) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković has told President of the Union of Doctors of Medicine Dr. Milena Popović Samardžić that he understands her concern for Montenegrin doctors, that the state is doing everything to equip the healthcare system with equipment in case of larger epidemic and that he is proud of all committed professionals, especially of health system which makes every effort to save the lives and health of citizens.
Integral text of the Prime Minister:
Dear Dr. Popović Samaradžić,
I have read your letter carefully and I fully understand your concern for Montenegrin doctors, as the entire nation and all state institutions share that concern today.
Honestly, I was taken aback by the fact that it was already in the media, while I was just reading it, as a newly arrived. You will admit that it can then be interpreted as to what the actual purpose of your address could be.
So, I want to assure you that the state is doing everything to equip the healthcare system with the necessary equipment in case of larger epidemic.
I witness the twenty-four-hour effort of responsible and committed professionals within the National Coordination Body and several operational staffs, including healthcare, to be prepared for the most difficult moments, which we want to avoid.
I am proud of all of them, especially of the health care system, which in difficult conditions is making every effort to save the lives of our people.
We will agree that the Coronavirus pandemic has plagued many states, including many more powerful and ready health systems than ours. Unfortunately, some are losing the battle with this vicious epidemic. As a result, almost all countries have banned the export of medical and protective equipment.
However, we have been able to order and pay for significant amounts of protective equipment, and we expect donor deliveries, as early as this week.
Dear Mrs. Popović Samardžić,
As you and I know, as well as the entire Montenegrin public - the system is not perfect, there are weaknesses and even shortcomings, but I am proud of the reaction and ability of all - not to talk about weaknesses at this difficult moment, but about how to tackle together the greatest threat to human lives since World War II.
In every similar situation, there are a large number of heroes of the society, but also those who are never satisfied and tapped into place on such needed path of communion and harmony.
Certainly, your suggestions as well as those of your other colleagues, regarding the fight against the Coronavirus epidemic, are already on the table of the National Coordination Body for Communicable Diseases.
Regarding your objection to the unethical behavior and non-solidarity of those associated with executive officials, I not only understand it, but I consider any benevolent indication in this context is welcomed.
And that means that I will not tolerate privileges, nor access and a personal relationship that is not appropriate for the situation and the challenge we are tackling with.
Dear doctors and health care professionals,
The Government works with your management around the clock to improve your position. I know it's not optimal, but we work on.
This time shows that the money we allocate on health care, must be better redistributed due to the greater profits and investment in equipment for the reliable and quality work of each of you.
As I said the other day: this is a moment of rebuke and renunciation of institutions and everyone in them, in order to preserve the lives of our citizens. We will have plenty of time and opportunity for criticism and accountability, when we tackle the biggest national challenge.
