Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović participated in a meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers today, held by video conference.
One of the key topics of the meeting was the security impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the Alliance and the Allies. In this regard, the meeting adopted a Declaration emphasising the solidarity and determination of the Allies to contribute, through mutual cooperation and coordination with other international partners, to the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
The Allies show a common commitment to this goal through a range of capacities available to them within the Alliance, including airlifting critical medical supplies from across the globe, providing medical personnel, essential materials, and vital equipment from military and civilian sources, and harnessing medical, scientific, and technological knowledge and resources to help deliver innovative responses - the Declaration states.
The meeting also discussed the Alliance's operational readiness to fulfill key tasks, as well as ways of countering COVID-19 growing disinformation campaign by ensuring public access to timely, accurate and transparent information. Furthermore, they discussed the strengthening of Allies' resilience and the ability of governments to respond to unforeseen events.
Minister Darmanović stressed the importance of unity and solidarity, as well as joint efforts and support in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.
He stressed the importance of military forces to national efforts in dealing with the pandemic, but at the same time the need to keep the operational capabilities of the Alliance and Allies at a high level. In relation to disinformation, the Montenegrin Foreign Minister stressed the importance of the necessary regular exchange of information among the Allies, but also the identification and more effective communication of concrete contributions by NATO members in the fight against the current crisis.
The meeting also discussed projecting stability beyond the borders of the Alliance, with a particular focus on the South, and strengthening deterrence and defence policies, and discussed other challenges affecting the security of the Euro-Atlantic area. Ministers also formally mandated the expert group to begin work and prepare a set of recommendations to strengthen the unity and political dimension of the Alliance.
The Allies welcomed North Macedonia, which for the first time participated in the meeting as a member of the Alliance.
