Podgorica, Montenegro (3 April 2020) -- Head of the Operating Staff for coordination of the implementation of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus prof. Dr. Vesna Miranović called earlier today on the heads of all local governments to take all measures within their competence, so our country continues to successfully tackle the coronavirus pandemic in the coming period.
"What I expect from the citizens, and from you, as the leading people in your communities, is to listen to the profession, without exception. We have made and will continue to make a number of difficult decisions. It was not easy to quarantine an entire city, but the local management of the Municipality of Tuzi supported us. There is no need to re-examine whether a particular right of our citizens is endangered, because the rights to life and health are basic human rights that outweigh all other rights," said Prof. Miranović at the first meeting with leaders of Montenegrin local governments.
Prof. Dr. Miranović stated that this is the moment when we must listen to doctors, without exception.
"Politics yield place to the medical profession, because of the challenges that we are facing. Each country in the world approaches its own way to solve this problem, because each of them takes into account their cultural achievements, the mental characteristics of their area, the level of health enlightening of the population and the way people accept the recommendations. We are a nation, which is by its nature prone to polemics and distrustful towards profession. In this situation, we do not have time for this, and time is the most important factor. Whoever timely realises how threatened we are, has a great advantage. It is a great advantage of our country that we started implementing the measures, before the first case of the coronavirus was detected. What will happen in the following two to three weeks, depends on our behaviour," said Prof. Miranović at her first meeting with the mayors of the municipalities and the Old Royal Capital Cetinje, and the representatives of the Capital Podgorica.
Representatives of the local governments pointed to the challenges in their communities and suggested way to overcome them.
The best way in distribution of all forms of support and donations is through centralisation and distribution via local representative offices of the Red Cross and in this regard any individual appearance was strictly prohibited, as it was recommended by the National Coordination Body, it was noted at the meeting.
In a constructive atmosphere, it was pointed to possibilities of additional involvement of the local services - communal police officers, inspections and protection and the rescue services, in the prevention measures that could be taken in the coming period.
