Podgorica, Montenegro (28 April 2020) -- Modern medical technique, cleanliness, impeccable order and high professionalism of health care professionals are the impressions that anyone who enters into the General Hospital in Nikšić has today. The largest general hospital in Montenegro with 409 employees, is a healthcare institution for example in organising work, treating patients and dedicating employees, as in the time of extraordinary circumstances imposed by the pandemic of the novel coronavirus.

Patients infected with the novel coronavirus were placed in an isolated area of the hospital, without contact with other patients. Teams of 26 healthcare professionals, who take turn in isolation, look after patients positive for the Covid -19.

First of the three teams of medical professionals, who is currently isolated with patients, should be changed these days. But they asked themselves to continue working in isolation until early May, Director of the Hospital Ilija Ašanin said.

"To meet all these occasions, we made preparations for this situation even before any patient with COVID infection came to the hospital in Nikšić. We have specified all the details, treatment protocols and movement of employees and patients. And this proved to be greatly important. It resulted in not having a single health worker who is positive for Covid infection so far," Dr. Ašanin said.

The complete place of General Hospital of Nikšić have been repurposed, so this health facility can meet the needs as a respiratory center for the northwestern part of Montenegro, i.e. the municipalities of Nikšić, Šavnik, Plužine, Žabljak and Pljevlja, as well as a hospital for Covid positive psychiatric patients of the whole of Montenegro, while ensuring usual serving all other patients.

Dr. Ašanin proudly points out that when patients positive for Covid needed to be treated, there was no hesitation at his hospital.

"This was supported by the decision that we passed at the Crisis Staff before all of this, since there are many employees here who are spouses, who both work in the Nikšić health system, who are the doctors, that if there are two employees at the Hospital or in the Health Centre or anywhere in healthcare, one can go home by reason of family and children. Everyone refused to do so. Everyone is there, we have no employee on sick leave or anyone who has shown in any way that they have any fear or resistance according to what we do today. I know that this is our social mission, that it is our obligation, we are learning and educated to help people in situations that are not pleasant. But what pleases me is that the health workers at the Nikšić General Hospital and from what I can see throughout the health system, have shown that they are worthy to wear this white coat," says Dr. Ilija Ašanin, Director of Nikšić General Hospital.
