Government pays EUR 200,000 to fishermen

Through the special Government programme to support agriculture and fisheries, with the aim of remedying the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, one-off support in the amount of EUR 213,300 has been paid to 183 professional fishermen holding a fishing license for offshore fishing.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, professional offshore fishermen were particularly affected due to the closure of catering facilities and the reduced work of green markets affected the livelihoods of commercial fishermen, their employees and their families.
The Government and the Ministry of Agriculture have again recognised the importance of fisheries and the complexity of the activities of professional fishermen, and have prepared a special package of financial assistance.
In addition to this one-off support, commercial fishermen can use the Market Intervention measure through the Special Programme of Support to Agriculture and Fisheries, which will support the purchase, storage and placement.
Also, a new favourable credit line has been provided through the Investment and Development Fund loan to get working capital, which will be approved up to a maximum amount of EUR 20,000, with an interest rate of 1.5 percent, a repayment period of up to two years and a grace period of up to one year. The Government also provided interest rate subsidies during the grace period.
Professional fishermen will be able to apply for support for the procurement of new vessels and for other significantly larger investments under the MIDAS II project. The amount of funds available for 2020 on this basis is EUR 400,000, and a call for tender is expected in the third quarter.
