Minister Darmanović at UNSC meeting: Foundations of multilateralism are based on universal values and principles cherished by UN

Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović participated today in a meeting of the Security Council entitled "75 Years from the End of the Second World War on European Soil – Lessons Learned for Preventing Future Atrocities, Responsibility of the Security Council ", which was held by video conference. The meeting, organised by Estonia as the country holding the presidency of the Security Council, was attended by more than 50 foreign ministers and their deputies, as well as a large number of permanent representatives of the United Nations member states. 

The introductory speeches of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia Urmas Reinsalu, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Undersecretary of the United Nations for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo were followed by speeches by participants, Foreign Ministers and Permanent Representatives to the United Nations. The participants exchanged opinions on the topic of conflict prevention in the future, with reference to the current security situation in the world, assessing that historical experiences from the Second World War point to the necessity of international cooperation in order to prevent conflicts, especially through existing multilateral frameworks. Furthermore, they stressed the obligation to respect the principles of international law that require the peaceful settlement of disputes and cooperation between states.

During his speech, Minister Darmanović emphasised the importance of today's gathering, which reminds of the historical significance of anti-fascism, as a value that is deeply rooted in Montenegrin culture and the constitutional system. "We must be aware that the foundations of multilateralism are based on universal values and principles cherished by the United Nations," he said. He especially pointed out the irreplaceable role of the Security Council in preserving peace and security in the international community. "Strengthening UN mechanisms for early recognition and response to crises, as well as a joint response to transnational threats, are key elements for building a common future in peace and prosperity. In that regard, Montenegro supports the reform of the United Nations, strengthening the role of the Security Council as well as the General Assembly," said Minister Darmanović.

In the context of the current situation, he praised the response of the United Nations to the coronavirus pandemic, pointing out the importance of solidarity and the preservation of multilateralism, as the only approach to solving global challenges.

"As a responsible state, Montenegro will, through a common system of values, continue to be committed to multilateral principles, European integration and regional cooperation. Not only due to the fact that the EU is one of the largest peace projects, but also a guarantor of stability," Darmanović concluded.
