Podgorica, Montenegro (9 May 2020) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković congratulated 9 May - Europe Day and said that only together - we are Europe.
"With this message of unity and solidarity, I would like to congratulate all our citizens and all European friends on our common holiday," the Prime Minister's congratulatory letter reads.
Montenegro, he added, joins in the celebration of the historic date for the European continent this year as well. Seventy years ago, on this day, the idea of the unity of Europe was born; an idea that, despite all the challenges, shaped the new future of the continent.
"Today, more than ever before, we are becoming aware of the visionary message from the 'Schuman Declaration' - that one of the pillars of the new Europe must be SOLIDARITY IN ACTION," Prime Minister Marković pointed out.
He added that, our common home, our European home, while facing these months with perhaps the biggest challenge in the past seven decades, (the deadly epidemic of coronavirus, which has already claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Europeans), has shown solidarity in action.
"No one was left alone in the fight against the deadly disease, not even the Western Balkans, although they are not formally members of the European family yet. The assistance that Montenegro received, both to support health in combating pandemic and to repair the economic consequences of the crisis is significant for us, not only in a material sense," said the Prime Minister.
This is another confirmation for us is that the European Union sincerely sees our country, our region as its inseparable part and that it remains committed to the European integration of the Western Balkans, the Prime Minister added.
According to Prime Minister Marković, the EU-Western Balkans Summit, which was held a few days ago within Croatia's presidency of the European Union, also confirmed this.
"Concretely and in action, the EU has demonstrated that, even in difficult times, it remains a true friend and ally of this part of Europe," Prime Minister Marković noted.
The Prime Minister emphasised that Montenegro will continue, with even greater zeal, to confirm in action its firm determination to join the great European family.
"We see our future as an equal part of the European project, because it is the most reliable guarantee of a better life for our citizens and the best perspective for our young generations," reads the congratulatory letter of Prime Minister Marković.
