Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Hungary Péter Szijjártó paid a visit to Montenegro today, during which he symbolically handed over a part of the donation of medical equipment to Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović. The donation of the Hungarian Government consists of 50,000 surgical masks and 2,500 protective suits.

"This is a gesture of solidarity and humanity, but also a confirmation that the allies support each other in difficult and challenging times," said Minister Darmanović. He thanked Hungary for its political and expert support from the very beginning of our reform and integration processes, both during NATO accession and in the process of negotiations with the European Union.

Referring to the consequences suffered by the world as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the two officials emphasised the importance of the financial support that the European Union has committed to the Western Balkans, the largest so far, which once again proved solidarity and geostrategic thinking, despite the current challenges.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjártó praised the efficiency and measures taken by the Government of Montenegro in dealing with the global health crisis. In the context of the European path, he reiterated the unequivocal support of official Budapest for Montenegro's efforts towards full membership in the EU, emphasising that after the COVID-19 pandemic, Brussels must take into account the importance of increasing the number of allies. "The membership of the Western Balkans is important for Hungary not only for political and security reasons, but also for economic reasons, and our economic interest is the enlargement of the European Union," Minister Szijjártó emphasised.

The two officials stated that the recent EU-WB Summit reaffirmed the European future of our region, and Minister Szijjártó emphasised that Hungary would continue to strongly advocate the opening of the last Chapter 8 - Competition in Montenegro's negotiations with the EU during Croatian presidency of the EU Council, as well as the closure of chapters for which technical conditions have already been created. "Commissioner Várhelyi is working hard to accelerate the development of the Western Balkans and its progress towards the EU," the Hungarian Foreign Minister said.

The meeting discussed the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in the field of investments, economy, banking, tourism and education, as well as the alliance and partnership of the two countries at the multilateral level.
