Podgorica, Montenegro (15 May 2020) -- A part of medical and personal protective equipment for health workers was delivered to Montenegro, within the EU donation worth EUR 3 million and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The rest of the equipment is expected to be delivered in the coming weeks.
Today, a part of the planned medical equipment was delivered to Montenegro, as follows: 14 medical respirators and a contingent of personal protective equipment for the health sector (80,000 gloves, 50,560 surgical masks and 10,200 goggles). At Montenegro’s request sent through NATO's mechanism, the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) in late April, the Kingdom of the Netherlands financed aircraft transport by which, a personal protection equipment that Montenegro purchased in China was also delivered next to the medical and protective equipment donated by the EU.
Chief Negotiator with EU Aleksandar Drljević emphasised that we succeeded in preserving the health of the population by complying with the recommendations and instructions of the profession and competent institutions, and that only by this way, we can be among the first countries to be "corona - free" countries.
"We were not alone in all of this, our partners from the EU, member states, international organisations such as UNDP and the World Health Organisation were with us, and that is what we are especially grateful for. Today, we witnessed the arrival of the contingent of aid that we provided with EU funds and taxpayers of member states, and this is a proof that along with Montenegro, in difficult times when we are all fighting against the coronavirus, partners stand firm," he said.
"Drljević particularly thanked the Netherlands for financing, through the EADRCC mechanism of NATO, the transport of equipment for the second time, along with equipment provided by donations of friends from China, the diaspora and citizens. "This is another confirmation that the EU and NATO are acting in a complementary way in these situations as well, and that only through unity and solidarity, we can find responses to the challenges that today's world is facing."
The Head of EU Delegation to Montenegro, Ambassador Aivo Orav, said that the donation delivered to Montenegro today is part of the EUR 3 million assistance and that symbolises the solidarity of EU citizens with the citizens of Montenegro.
"Today's delivery includes a lot of protective equipment, such as masks and gloves, but we also have respirators. One may wonder why respirators, when there are no infected for days, but as the weather today is changeable and I carry an umbrella if I need it, so it is with respirators - hopefully they will not be needed, but if the second wave comes, it is better to have them," said Orav.
He thanked the Netherlands and NATO for organising the flight, the colleagues from the UNDP who made the donation, as well as the Government and the citizens of Montenegro who, accordingly to him, were ready to cooperate.
UNDP Resident Representative to Montenegro Daniela Gasparikova said that the UNDP is with partners from the Government and the EU Delegation, in order to show that cooperation yields results.
"Although we are all glad that the epidemic is under control in Montenegro, this medical equipment is an investment in the preparedness of the health sector. With constant interruptions in global medical supply chains, every donation and new delivery makes Montenegro stronger in its continuous response against the virus, until the vaccine becomes available," she said.
The contract for the purchase of necessary medical equipment and personal protective equipment for health workers, worth EUR 3 million, was signed in early April between the European Union Delegation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Montenegro. The agreement provides the donation to Montenegro, which includes 100 respirators, 10 mobile X-ray devices, as well as personal protective equipment - including masks, gloves, surgical caps, protective suits and goggles.
