Podgorica, Montenegro (27 May 2020) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković said at the Prime Minister's Questions that the epidemic of coronavirus made it more difficult for organised criminal groups to operate, but that state authorities, even before and during the global pandemic, carried out daily and comprehensive activities to combat organised crime and that the pandemic had raised awareness of the need to protect the environment.

"Specifically, the activities of the Police in the period from May last year to May of the current year, resulted in the filing of 58 criminal charges against 264 individuals and 70 legal entities for criminal acts committed in an organised way. Also, 11 criminal offenses, which are a consequence of the conflict of organized criminal groups, were solved, and the commission of 9 serious criminal offenses in the field of violent crimes was prevented. Orders temporarily imposing restrictions on all types of traffic, including road traffic were among first measures to combat coronavirus. These restrictions have led to a significant reduction in the number of traffic accidents and the number of fatalities, as basic measurable indicators of the safety situation in the road traffic. Improving road safety remains a very demanding task. In the coming period, the implementation of the so-called "Safe System Approach", which relies on European practices, will continue, with the aim of creating conditions for safe traffic and maximum risk reduction for all traffic participants. I believe that the whole world has learned many lessons from this crisis situation, including the lesson concerning the environmental protection. Measurements at many points around the globe have shown that we were irresponsible towards nature as the most important resource, before the outbreak of the epidemic and that our behaviors and practices must change in the time to come. What is certain is that environmental principles will play a more significant role in preserving global health, after this pandemic. While Montenegro will shape and implement environmental and climate change policy to these principles. As the epidemiological situation in our country improves, the whole series of activities related to the construction of modern ecological infrastructure, pollution remediation and preservation of natural resources continues," said the Prime Minister.
