The Kingdom of Norway donated ten ventilators to Montenegro to strengthen its readiness in the fight against the COVID-19 virus pandemic. This medical equipment worth EUR 188,000 will also be used to strengthen the health system.
Deputy Prime Minister and President of the National Coordination Body for Communicable Diseases Milutin Simović thanked the Kingdom of Norway and its Embassy for the valuable donation, which will further strengthen the readiness of the Montenegrin health system to continue successfully fighting the coronavirus epidemic and respond to challenges that lay ahead of us in the event of the next waves of the epidemic.
"The Kingdom of Norway is a true friend and ally of Montenegro. This is especially shown through development cooperation projects in areas that are defined as priorities for Montenegro, and which are implemented in cooperation with the Kingdom of Norway," said Deputy Prime Minister Simović.
DPM Simović thanked the United Nations Office for Project Services - UNOPS for cooperation and coordination in the procurement of the donation.
The donated equipment is intended for respiratory support to patients suffering from acute respiratory distress, spasm or obstruction. Thanks to that, apart from fighting the coronavirus pandemic, ventilators also support the regular functioning of Montenegrin hospitals.
"This is a good day for Norway and Montenegro in the joint fight against the COVID-19 virus, which has spread rapidly in almost all parts of the world, which has overloaded even the most resilient health systems. That is why we need to focus on high-quality hospital conditions, especially in intensive care units. I am very glad that by increasing the capacity of these units, we were able to help Montenegro in the fight against the pandemic, and its efforts to save lives. Therefore, our priority was to procure clinical ventilators to support critically ill patients. Norway has a highly developed capacity to respond quickly to crises and disasters through the allocation of funds for medical needs. I am proud and happy that we managed to provide significant funds to Montenegro in resolving the effects of this crisis, as an act of solidarity ", said the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway Jørn Eugen Gjelstad.
The United Nations Office for Project Services - UNOPS conducted a public procurement process and delivered medical equipment, in accordance with the National Plan for Readiness and Response of Montenegro to COVID-19, developed by the Government of Montenegro and a team of UN agencies in Montenegro led by the World Health Organisation.
"As part of the international response to the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 virus pandemic, UNOPS has made its expertise available to governments and donors to ensure that the necessary medical equipment reaches countries. We are very glad that we provided support to the Kingdom of Norway in the procurement of medical equipment, as well as to the Government of Montenegro in response to the pandemic. Alongside other UN agencies dedicated to achieving the 2030 Agenda, UNOPS, as a public procurement agency, has delivered ventilators to health facilities for people who need them," said Michela Telatin, UNOPS Head for Serbia, North Macedonia and Montenegro.
