Montenegro and the Republic of Croatia cherish comprehensive and friendly relations, as evidenced by frequent political contacts, intensive cooperation within the European agenda, but also the alliance in NATO – it was assessed at the meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro and Croatia, Srđan Darmanović and Gordan Grlić Radman, who is paying an official visit to Montenegro.

Minister Darmanović said that today, on the third anniversary of Montenegro's membership in the Alliance, we can state that we, together with our allies, are a safe and secure state.

In the context of European integration, Minister Darmanović emphasised that Montenegro highly respects Croatia's efforts to keep enlargement policy, despite the COVID 19 pandemic, as well as numerous other challenges, high on the agenda during its presidency of the EU Council, and especially to achieve results.

Zagreb has consistently advocated for enlargement policy and provided political and expert support to Montenegro during all these years of the negotiation process. We are grateful for the consistency and visible engagement of Croatia to contribute to the strengthening of the European perspective and the creation of a new momentum in the integration process – said Minister Darmanović. He pointed out that the pandemic once again showed that the EU is the strongest when it acts united, proving that unity and solidarity are the greatest value of the European project, which, for us, has no alternative.

The Minister thanked Croatia for the help it sent to Montenegro in the fight against COVID 19, but also for the support in the process of repatriation of our citizens through its territory, during the pandemic.

Croatian Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Grlić Radman said that his visit to Montenegro, the first since the beginning of the crisis caused by the coronavirus, represents symbolism and determination to continue with the consistency of Croatian affection and support for Montenegro on its European path. We want to see Montenegro in the EU as soon as possible. We are actively advocating for the policy of enlargement of the Union, as well as for the opening of the last negotiating chapter – Minister Grlić Radman pointed out. He added that Croatia is open to any kind of assistance to Montenegro in the further process of integration, and that it condemns any interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state.

It was jointly stated that interstate cooperation is very developed in the fields of defence, internal affairs, education and culture, and that there is a significant potential for its further improvement, especially in the field of economy. The alliance and intensive cooperation between Montenegro and Croatia within NATO were welcomed, and the issue of opening borders after the coronavirus pandemic was discussed.

The two officials also exchanged opinions on current topics on the domestic and global scene, the challenges we face in that context, and stated that the united forces need to preserve the stability and security of the Region.
