Over EUR 17 million will be invested in the reconstruction of several clinics of the Clinical Centre of Montenegro (KCCG), which will enable citizens to receive a high-quality health service in new and modern clinics, equipped by European standards.

After the successful fight against the coronavirus, the Government will continue to invest in the long-term strengthening of the capacity of the health system, and in that regard, the European Union will continue to provide partnership and support. The goal is to have a strong and adequately equipped health system, which can effectively respond to all health challenges and provide high-quality protection to all citizens.

The EU intends to allocate EUR 8.5 million for the construction of clinics for infectious diseases and dermato-venerology within the Clinical Centre of Montenegro. From the donations paid to the National Coordination Body for Communicable Diseases and the funds of the Government of Montenegro, the Mental Health Clinic will be built and the premises of the former Oncology Clinic will be reconstructed for the needs of the Centre for Hematology. The value of these works is EUR 8.7 million.

Today, Head of the EU Delegation to Montenegro Aivo Orav handed over a Letter of Intent for the construction of clinics for infectious diseases and dermato-venereology to the Prime Minister of Montenegro Duško Marković

"I want to thank the EU for this, but also for the overall support and assistance it provided to Montenegro in the fight against coronavirus. These clinics will be a kind of proof of the difficult time we went through together, but also of our solidarity, which was manifested through this help. We will additionally improve and modernise our health capacities with the money paid to the National Coordination Body by citizens and business people. All these facilities will be a testimony of our unity, but also of the responsible attitude of the institutions in this extremely difficult health crisis," said Prime Minister Marković.

The goal of the project is to respond to the real needs of patients, and funds for the construction of clinics for infectious diseases and dermato-venereology were provided from IPA funds. The total value of the investment is EUR 8,532 million without VAT, and the project plans the construction, supervision of works, equipping and formal opening of two clinics.

"As before the Covid-19 pandemic, the EU remains Montenegro’s closest partner and biggest donor, including when it comes to the reform of its public health sector. I am glad to share today’s good news that will allocate EUR 8.5 million for the construction of a clinic for infectious diseases as well as a clinic for dermato-venerology in Podgorica. This health crisis has shown that the public health sectors across Europe need investment and modernisation. EU citizens stand by Montenegro with this important donation, which is part of a larger EU assistance package worth EUR 53 million to help the country manage the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic," said Ambassador Orav.

Given that a large number of citizens and business people have donated to the National Coordination Body for the fight against coronavirus, that money will also be invested in improving the quality of service in the health system. Namely, the Mental Health Clinic, worth EUR 4.8 million, will be built from that and the money of the Government of Montenegro. The project envisages the removal of the existing dilapidated facility and the construction and equipping of a modern Mental Health Clinic.

The space of the former Oncology Clinic will also be reconstructed for the needs of the Centre for Hematology, and the estimated value of these works is around EUR 3.9 million. The existing facility will be adapted and upgraded for the needs of the modern Centre for Hematology, which would solve the chronic problem that the Clinical Centre of Montenegro has in this area.

Part of the funds from donations paid to the National Coordination Body will be directed to support three "covid" hospitals, in Berane, Nikšić and Bar, for their additional equipment, as an expression of support and appreciation for the efforts made by employees of these three hospitals, as part of the overall response against COVID-19.
