"Bearing in mind that the rich cultural heritage of the Municipality of Ulcinj is a significant segment, which contributes to the overall values of Montenegrin cultural heritage, its protection, preservation and transmission to future generations in authentic form is the responsibility of owners and holders and institutions and all its citizens, regardless on whose property certain segments of that heritage are, and regardless of their secular or religious character," said Minister of Culture Aleksandar Bogdanović commenting for CDM on the removal of the illegally built facility in Zoganj, which disturbed the environment of the Church of St. Basil of Ostrog.
Minister Bogdanović emphasised that the Ministry of Culture has a clear position on all interventions that contribute to the degradation of the mentioned values.
"We remind you that from the aspect of cultural heritage protection, the Study for the Protection of Cultural Heritage for the needs of drafting the Spatial Plan of the Municipality of Ulcinj recognises this church, whose construction dates from the 18th century, as a sacral facility that is supposed to have cultural values. Furthermore, this study prescribes that when drafting the Spatial Plan of the Municipality of Ulcinj, it is necessary to respect the basic conservation principles in preserving cultural values, not only facilities with the status of cultural property, but also to pay attention to other segments of immovable cultural heritage," explained Minister Bogdanović.
In that context, and in accordance with the provisions of the Law on the Protection of Cultural Heritage, he emphasised that this document provides for the protection, preservation and integration of cultural heritage within the planning of sustainable spatial development.
"Having in mind the priority goals of the Ministry of Culture which are aimed at protecting cultural heritage and preserving cultural diversity through improving the condition and value of all its segments, when it comes to the Church of St. Basil of Ostrog, located near the illegally built facility, which is removed, the performed interventions preserved not only the environmental, but also other potential cultural values, recognised by this Study," said Minister Bogdanović.
