Government provides financial assistance to media during coronavirus pandemic
Published on: Jun 14, 2020 • 4:06 PM Author: PR Service
The Government of Montenegro wants a sustainable media community, an independent editorial media policy, which will inform citizens professionally and accurately, respecting ethical norms and standards.
Understanding the difficult situation in which the Montenegrin media were due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Government and the competent ministry made a number of decisions to help their financial sustainability.
The Government's firm commitment to support media pluralism, and a stimulating environment for the work of the media, is reflected in the joint work on the improvement of legislation, but also in the specific financial support that has been allocated several times.
During the coronavirus epidemic, direct financial support of over EUR 310,000 was provided, and an additional EUR 300,000 is the value of obligations the media were exempt from paying or their payment was postponed, and they had the option of deferring taxes and contributions for 90 days.
The Government has also provided wage subsidies for media employees, i.e. the media which are classified as vulnerable. A credit line has been provided with the Investment and Development Fund for credit funds in the amount of up to EUR 600,000, and so far, funds in the total amount of over EUR 1.6 million have been requested on that basis.
The support measures were aimed at the media with the largest audience, which have an informative programme every day. Support is also provided for all print media (Pobjeda, Vijesti, Dan, Dnevne novine), commercial television broadcasters with national coverage (TV Vijesti, TV Prva, TV Nova M), portals with the highest number of visits (Vijesti, CDM, Analitika, FOS, Antena M) as well as for 14 local public broadcasters.
Furthermore, the safety and security of journalists is a value to which we are committed every day, so journalists and media employees are provided with free protective equipment during the coronavirus epidemic in Montenegro.
