The Government of Montenegro, by accepting the new methodology of accession to the European Union, has shown readiness to intensify the process, it was assessed at the session of the Negotiating Group.
The 23rd session of the Negotiating Group, chaired by Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Drljević, was held today at the European Integration Office. The members of the Negotiating Group discussed the new methodology, the Non-Paper on the state of play regarding chapters 23 and 24, as well as the support to Montenegro from EU funds during the coronavirus epidemic.
It was concluded that the adoption of the new methodology was preceded by consultations and a detailed analysis of the benefits of the new approach.
"The new methodology, in a technical sense, does not bring anything new when it comes to Montenegro's negotiations with the EU, but it emphasises the political will on both sides to continue reforms and represents a step forward in the process. By accepting the new methodology, the Government has shown the will and readiness to implement its obligations even more intensively and dedicatedly, and everyone should be aware of their role, because the success of the overall process depends on fulfilling individual obligations," said Drljević.
Members of the Negotiating Group assessed that the Non-Paper gave additional value to the process, bearing in mind that the document showed that there is progress in key areas on which progress in the negotiations depends.
"We believe that progress in the area of the rule of law, noted in the Non-Paper, will be an incentive for member states to give the green light for the forthcoming opening of Chapter 8, in order to step into a more demanding phase of the process," the Chief Negotiator added.
He also referred to the support to Montenegro from EU funds during the epidemic crisis, assessing that the EU has once again shown its commitment to this region, as well as that it is our credible partner.
