National Coordination Body, state institutions and civil sector agree: together to respond to challenges of holding elections during coronavirus pandemic

Podgorica, Montenegro (8 July 2020) -- The National Coordination Body for Communicable Diseases, the representatives of state institutions and non-governmental organisations dealing with the election process agreed, at today's meeting, to join efforts in finding answers to all challenges posed by the election process, in a situation of widespread infection with coronavirus.
At the session, chaired by President of the National Coordination Body Milutin Simović, it was formed a working group of representatives of the National Coordination Body, relevant institutions and the civil sector, which immediately began working with the aim of perceiving all challenges of this significant process, preparing guidelines and binding instructions for all aspects of holding elections in conditions of coronavirus pandemic.
The meeting, which took place in a constructive atmosphere and good understanding, analyzed the electoral processes, which in these circumstances were held in several countries, with the aim of using best practices and comparative experiences.
Bearing in mind the initiative already launched by the Parliament of Montenegro, the readiness was expressed for the National Coordination Body to respond to the invitation of the parliament, as key addresses for political dialogue in Montenegro, and for the representatives of the National Coordination Body to participate in the dialogue with all interested and responsible political entities.
Participants agreed that the main strength lies in a broad partnership for the benefit of society as a whole.
The undivided interest of all participants in the dialogue is to preserve the health and lives of citizens in the election process, which is a constitutional obligation and a right, it was noted at the meeting.
Once more, the National Coordination Body clearly expresses its openness and readiness to communicate and cooperate with all constructive and responsible subjects and individuals, with the aim of preserving the health and life of citizens, while preserving the constitutional obligation and the right for holding elections.
In addition to President of the National Coordination Body Milutin Simović, members of the National Coordination Body, Minister of the Interior Mevludin Nuhodžić, Director of Institute for Public Health Prof. Dr. Boban Mugoša and Assistant Director Dr. Senad Begić, on behalf of the State Election Commission, President Aleksa Ivanović and members Natasa Pešić and Milisav Ćorić, on behalf of the Agency for Prevention of Corruption, Acting Director Savo Milašinović, State Secretary at the Ministry of the Interior Dragan Pejanović, and on behalf of the civil sector Dragan Koprivica (Centre for Democratic Transition - CDT), Zlatko Vujović (Centre for Monitoring and Research - CEMI), Zoran Vujičić (Civic Alliance) and Milena Bešić (Centre for Democracy and Human Rights - CEDEM), also took part in the work of the session.
