Podgorica, Montenegro (17 July 2020) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković hosted earlier today Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Robert Heinrich Weber, who presented to the Prime Minister the priorities of German Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The interlocutors agreed that most of the six priorities of the German presidency of the European Union, do not refer only to the member states and that Montenegro, as the leading candidate for membership in the Union, is already implementing activities compatible with the EU policy. It was emphasized that the policy of our country in tackling the pandemic was harmonized with the policy of the European Union, which was noted in Brussels.
The Prime Minister congratulated the ambassador on taking over the presidency of the Union, assessing that this is happening at the right time for Europe, and assessed that the leadership of Germany and the priorities of the German presidency are current and needed in Europe now. "I believe that Montenegro will also have the opportunity to use European funds to recover our economy," said Prime Minister Duško Marković.
Speaking about our process of joining the Union, the Prime Minister said that it was in Montenegro's interest to intensify the process of closing the negotiation chapters during the German presidency, starting with several chapters for which we already have internal readiness. "I know that it is important to meet the interim benchmarks for Chapters 23 and 24, in order to get the final one. We will be focused on that, we will activate all our potentials. Addressing the weaknesses of the judicial system and strengthening the fight against corruption, will also be a priority," said the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister thanked Germany for its support so far, especially during the recent opening of the last negotiating chapter, and emphasized our country's readiness for intensive contacts with Germany, with the aim of further improving our European integration process. "We are ready for quality contact with the German Federal Government, Parliament, Chamber of Commerce, private sector… We want to take advantage of every opportunity for our country," said Prime Minister Duško Marković in a conversation with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany.
