Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Policy and Financial System Milutin Simović hosted today the newly elected Head of the UNICEF Office in Montenegro, Juan Santander.

The Deputy Prime Minister congratulated Santander on his appointment and welcomed him to Montenegro. DPM Simović expressed satisfaction with the fact that Santander has extensive experience and professional career within the UNICEF system, previously proven in numerous missions, which will certainly contribute to further improving the good relationship and partnership of the Government of Montenegro and UNICEF.

"Every time carries its own burden", said DPM Simović, "and at this time we are facing a global challenge, which is a consequence of the COVID 19 pandemic, in which we must protect the achievements of our previous joint work and not allow the negative effects of the health and socio-economic crisis to be felt by children."

The Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that all planned projects require joint action, at the national level, within the entire system of the United Nations, UNICEF and the European Union. "We will be successful as long as that partnership is broad and strong," Simović added.

Deputy Prime Minister Simović thanked the UNICEF Office in Montenegro for its activities and contribution in the fight against the consequences of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 epidemic in Montenegro.

"Our priorities must remain the health, nutrition, education, rights and early development of children," Simović said, reaffirming the Government's and his personal readiness to get involved in all UNICEF initiatives and projects that will achieve national and global goals and provide a happy and carefree childhood to every child.

Juan Santander identified child poverty and early development as the two priorities that UNICEF will work on the most in the coming period, emphasising that poverty means not only a lack of income, but a lack of opportunities for every child to realise all their rights and potentials.

"The crisis caused by the coronavirus has made child poverty an even greater challenge both in the world and in Montenegro. Eradicating child poverty from an early age will be a priority for UNICEF in the coming period. This will include supporting Montenegro to engage even more intensively in public budgeting for the realisation of children's rights, in line with the recommendations of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. Finally, UNICEF will also provide assistance to Montenegro to raise generations of children and young people who accept and celebrate differences, respect each other and solve all problems through dialogue," Santander said.
