PM Marković meets with Coordinator McCluney: UN supports Montenegro’s progress

Podgorica, Montenegro (21 July 2020) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković hosted a farewell visit by UN Resident Coordinator in Montenegro Fiona McCluney and thanked her for her contribution to strengthening the overall capacities of our country and social cohesion. 

"The United Nations has continuously given full support to Montenegro, its democratisation and strengthening of institutions through the implementation of goals drafted in the Integrated Programme 2017-2021. Five resident and seven non-resident agencies of the UN, participated in the implementation of this Programme," said Prime Minister Marković, noting McCLuney's personal contribution to strengthening cooperation and achieving results.

Prime Minister Marković thanked the entire system of the United Nations, for its efficient and timely assistance in the fight against coronavirus. The UN activities, carried out together with the EU, have helped Montenegro to gain significant health equipment and to respond adequately to the challenges.

"Our health care system, even in the second wave of coronavirus, is vital and prepared to deal with the consequences of the epidemic," said Prime Minister Marković.

He noted that Montenegro has made enormous progress since restoration of independence, by becoming a full member of NATO and making significant progress on the path to the EU. Commitments from the EU negotiations, in the field of environmental protection, are compatible with the goals from the UN Agenda 2030, which will enable Montenegro to make a rapid progress in this area.

"Montenegro is a highly active member of the United Nations system," McCluney said, thanking the Prime Minister for the country's constructive contribution in promoting the fundamental values of this organisation. 

McCluney especially emphasized the efficient response of Montenegro to COVID-19, towards protecting the health of citizens, preserving the economic base, as well as creating conditions for a quick recovery.

"I am very proud of the UN system cooperation with the Government of Montenegro, in response to the pandemic. At a time when the country is facing an unprecedented crisis, the United Nations team in the country has mobilized its resources in a short period of time and redirected its capacities to provide support to the country in response to the pandemic. "Montenegro can count on the continued support of the UN system, based on the Plan for urgent socio-economic response to the consequences of the pandemic, which includes five priority areas of cooperation namely health, social protection, preservation of the economy, recovery of the macroeconomic framework and strengthening the resilience of local communities," McCluney said, highlighting that the vulnerable groups are in the focus of UN support in tackling the pandemic consequences. 

The UN Resident Coordinator wished the Prime Minister a successful continuation of the European agenda implementation and expressed expectation for further intensification of activities on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, hoping that Montenegro will continue to work on strengthening sustainable development and protection of human rights.
