Podgorica, Montenegro (29 July 2020) -- The Montenegrin negotiating structure achieved great success, as evidenced by the opening of all chapters and the readiness to close certain negotiating areas, it was noted at a meeting between Chief Negotiator with the EU Aleksandar Drljević and Head of EU Delegation to Montenegro Aivo Orav, and assessed that support of the EU and member states will not fail nor in the continuation of the integration path of Montenegro.
Drljević hosted a farewell visit earlier today by Ambassador Orav and thanked him for the excellent cooperation and communication with the EU Delegation to Montenegro during his mandate, as well as for the significant support to our country in the negotiation process.
"Progress in the negotiation process is the result of dedicated work of the negotiating structure, but also of an excellent cooperation with the EU Delegation and the European Commission, for which I believe will continue in the future, especially as we have intensive work on overcoming challenges in this process, mostly in political criteria," the Chief Negotiator pointed out.
In that regard, he reminded of the importance of dialogue in the Montenegrin parliament, emphasizing that the negotiation process, in order to be successfully completed by Montenegro's membership in the EU, must include the entire society. "We have received an incentive and encouragement from the EU, through the consent for the opening of the last negotiating chapter, to continue the implementation of reforms, and I expect all competent institutions to continue working even more decisively," he added.
Ambassador Orav thanked for the excellent cooperation so far, praising the work of the entire negotiating structure and the great work done in the previous period. "By opening negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania, we have made it clear that this region can count on the EU and that we believe that the place of the Western Balkan countries is among the EU member states. We confirmed that support once again by opening the last negotiation chapter with Montenegro," he said.
He encouraged all competent institutions to continue with the activities that will take Montenegro to a new phase of negotiations and to the closing of the chapter, and ultimately result in our country becoming the first next member of the EU.
Both sides noted that the challenging period caused by the coronavirus epidemic, showed partnership and solidarity in action, as well as an advantage of belonging to the community of the European nations.
