National Coordination Body decides, at suggestion of Public Health Institute, to shorten quarantine and self – isolation from 21-day to 14 days

Podgorica, Montenegro (2 August 2020) -- The National Coordination Body for Communicable Diseases decided earlier today, at the suggestion of the Public Health Institute of Montenegro, in accordance with the recommendations of relevant international organizations and the practice already in force in most EU countries, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, Japan and many other countries, to shorten the time of self-isolation and institutional isolation of persons who have been in contact or are suspected of being in contact with infected persons, patients without a clinical picture or a mild clinical picture, as well as the time of institutional isolation of persons who were hospitalized for the novel coronavirus, from the now prescribed 21 days to 14 days.
The latest scientific evidence indicates that the infectivity of patients is significantly shorter than originally thought, and that patients are contagious a day or two before the onset of symptoms, that the infectivity increases with the onset of symptoms, that it is greatest during the first two days and after this, it would slowly decline and lost during the first ten days of illness, in those patients who had mild symptoms. The infectivity of asymptomatic cases obviously lasts even shorter. This indicates that patients who did not have symptoms, and in whom at least 14 days have passed since taking a sample for a test that was positive, do not pose a danger to their environment and therefore, there is no need for their self-isolation after 14 days, it was noted at the explanation of the suggestion of the Public Health Institute, on shortening the self-isolation measure in Montenegro as well.
Taking into account the latest scientific knowledge and recommendations of the relevant international bodies, the National Coordination Body has made the appropriate decision, which will take effect today.
The self-isolation measure is revoked for persons whose 14-day self-isolation period has expired on the day this measure enters into force, and who have no symptoms or signs of infection for at least three days.
