New Government's support to fishermen, in amount of EUR 225,000

Through a special Government's programme to support agriculture and fisheries, which was adopted with the aim of remedying the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, through the Government's Market intervention programme, income support in the amount of EUR 224.700 was paid to 200 fishermen, who are licensed to conduct commercial fishing at sea.

The Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have once again recognized the importance of fishing, and this support is a continuation of the support that was granted in May as a one-time aid for 186 commercial fishermen at sea, in the amount of EUR 213,300.

The amount of support paid to commercial fishermen at sea, which the Government paid for remediation of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, is equal to the amount of last year's complete budget for fisheries.

In addition to these two types of support, commercial fishermen will be able to use the possibility of rescheduling loans, through the Government's third support package, with interest subsidies in full amount during the grace period. Also, through the Investment and Development Fund, a new favourable credit line was provided for the purchase of working capital up to a maximum amount of EUR 20,000 with an interest rate of 1.5%, a repayment period of up to two years and a grace period of up to one year. The Government also ensured interest rate subsidies, during the grace period.

The Government and fishermen, through a good partnership, are achieving results at the international level as well. Given that fish resources in marine fisheries are shared among countries, Montenegro has managed to fight, at the Mediterranean level, for the Montenegrin fisheries sector to be treated differently from other members of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, including EU countries.

In negotiations with the EU, we have achieved to increase the right to catch small blue fish of 40 t to the level of 2,500 t and the possibility of increasing the capacity of the fleet to catch white fish by 50%, as well as to increase the number of fishing days to 3,000.

Under the MIDAS II project, which is being implemented, professional fishermen will be provided with the opportunity to apply for support for the purchase of new vessels and other major investments with a grant of 80% of the invested funds. The announcement of the Public Call for this support will be in the third quarter.
