As part of his working visit to Kotor, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture Milutin Simović visited the Institute of Marine Biology with President of the Municipality Željko Aprcović.

In recent years, the Ministry of Agriculture invested significant funds in the development of infrastructure, equipment, rejuvenation of scientific staff and raising the general conditions for scientific research. The building was reconstructed, equipped with the most modern laboratories that have international certificates, and a research ship was procured. The construction of the first marine aquarium in Montenegro, worth EUR 1.2 million, which is financed in partnership between the governments of Norway and Montenegro, is in the final stage.

"It will be a new scientific research and educational base of the Montenegrin educational system. Our common wish is that all pupils and students in Montenegro go through this unit of the institute for free. With the construction of the aquarium, the Institute will become an unavoidable tourist address," DPM Simović noted.

Also, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, a very important capital project Food4Health is being implemented, which will, based on science, produce young oysters in very controlled conditions, and later distribute them free of charge to growers in order to increase production of this important species and preserve natural resources in Boka. "Along with small blue fish, we believe that shellfish can be recognized as a branded product of high quality and represent an extremely attractive tourist and gastronomic offer of Montenegro with a product that will be called the delicacy of the Bay of Kotor.

Institute recognized on scientific maps of the Mediterranean

The trained and young scientific staff of the Institute occupies a reference and recognizable place on the list of Mediterranean institutes for marine research. This is proven by over 40 projects in the implementation, of which the Institute participates either as a coordinator or as a partner in the project.

"As a scholarship holder of the Ministry of Science in doctoral studies, I conduct my research here at the Institute thanks to modern equipment and laboratories, which provide valuable conditions for scientific research," said doctoral student Neda Bošković.

With continuous support to the Institute, as a scientific research organizational unit of the University of Montenegro, encouraging results have been achieved, said DPM Simović and stressed that this excellent example of inter-institutional cooperation between the University, the Institute, the Ministry of Agriculture and fishermen is the only possible way for future sustainable development of this sector and life in Montenegro.
