Podgorica, Montenegro (10 September 2020) – The latest donation from the European Union, in the form of personal protective equipment for health workers worth over EUR 200,000, was handed over and made available to the health system of Montenegro. This delivery includes 8,000 protective suits, 332,000 shoe covers, 457,700 surgical caps and 600,000 surgical gloves. The donation is part of the European Union's project for emergency support to Montenegro in the fight against Covid-19, worth a total of EUR 3 million, which is being implemented by the UNDP Office in Montenegro. Since the beginning of the project, from April until today, a total of 100 hospital ventilators, 10 modern X-ray devices and almost 2 million pieces of personal protective equipment have been delivered, including surgical masks, gloves, caps, protective suits, aprons, glasses, shoe covers, etc.

On the occasion of handing over the equipment, the Head of the European Union Delegation to Montenegro, Ambassador Oana Kristina Popa, emphasised that today's donation is another confirmation that the European Union supports Montenegro in difficult times, by helping its health services fight the coronavirus epidemic. "Since the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic, the European Union has clearly shown that Montenegro is not alone, that we are with you and that you can count on the solidarity and support of the EU, in order to mitigate the consequences of this crisis," Ambassador Popa said. The Ambassador reminded that today's delivery is part of the European Union support package worth EUR 53 million, intended for the Montenegrin health sector and other sectors most affected by the crisis caused by the coronavirus. Today, when we deliver protective equipment that is vital for Montenegrin health workers, we continue to show that solidarity is not just a word, but a key European value," Ambassador Popa concluded.

On behalf of the National Coordination Team, the Director of the Clinical Centre of Montenegro, Dr Jevto Eraković thanked the European Union for the support and assistance they provided to Montenegro from the first day of the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic. "This support meant a lot to us and it always came at the right time. This is the case with this delivery as well, considering the growing number of registered infections and COVID patients," Dr Eraković emphasised. He said that we can be very satisfied with the response of the Montenegrin health system and that the capacities of the Clinical Centre of Montenegro and other institutions can fully respond to all the challenges ahead. "At the same time, the message to all citizens is that they should adhere to all measures recommended by the National Coordination Body. By following these recommendations, we will be able to fight this virus more easily," said Dr Eraković, thanking the partners from the EU Delegation and UNDP for the successful and high-quality cooperation.

Daniela Gasparikova, UNDP Resident Representative for Montenegro, reminded that this is the fifth contingent of medical and personal protective equipment, which was provided within the project financed by the European Union. "In the last few months, we have delivered 100 hospital ventilators, 10 digital X-rays and almost 2 million pieces of personal protective equipment to the health sector, including today's donation. This is proof of a strong partnership between the European Union, UNDP and national partners," Gasparikova said. She pointed out that the citizens of Montenegro have already shown in the first wave that the epidemic can be kept under control by responsible behaviour, self-discipline and respect for measures. "I urge all citizens to continue to slightly adjust their behaviour and to contribute with their responsibility to Montenegro overcoming the challenges and bringing the epidemic back under control. That is why my message to the citizens is very simple: distance, hand hygiene, mask!" Gasparikova said.

The Delegation of the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Montenegro signed an agreement worth EUR 3 million in early April to procure the necessary medical equipment and personal protective equipment for the health system. The contract is financed from EU funds, and the procurement is carried out by UNDP in close cooperation with the competent institutions.
