Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic has met with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, who is making an official visit to Montenegro.

The integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union will enrich the future and geo-political space of Europe, said the Foreign Minister of Spain which currently holds the EU presidency. At the meeting with Prime Minister Djukanovic, Foreign Minister underlined the importance of Montenegro’s accession to the European Union, adding that it deserved this for the speed of the progress and results achieved.

Prime Minister Djukanovic noted that this first visit by a senior Spanish official to Montenegro was a confirmation of Spain’s commitment to the EU integration of the Western Balkans, adding that the open-door policy was the most significant encouragement to governments in the region. According to the Prime Minister, integration is the answer and a common denominator for the regional stability and cooperation among the countries of the region, to which Montenegro is fully committed. Djukanovic and Moratinos discussed the forthcoming conference on the Western Balkans in Sarajevo, which was said to be an additional incentive to regional cooperation on the path towards the EU.

The Foreign Minister has also conveyed to Prime Minister Djukanovic an invitation from Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero to participate in a conference on the Mediterranean taking place in Barselona in June.

It was agreed that the two Mediterranean countries would make efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation through closer economic ties as well.
