Education in Montenegro

Illiteracy of the population, according to census from 1991 (older than 10), was most evident among the people older than 65. The total number of illiterate people, according to the census, is 30443, or 5.9% of the total population. Out of the total number of illiterate population, 25.217 - or 82.8% - are women.
There are 119.360 students and pupils in the educational system of Montenegro, about 9000 university students and 8.590 teachers. The total number of employed in pre-university education is 12205.
Teachers make 70% of the total number of the employed in education. Approximately 900 science workers and 600 administrative workers are employed at universities. Teaching staff needed for preschool institutions, and for primary and secondary schools, get their education at the Faculty of Philosophy in Nikšić and on other faculties of University of Montenegro.
Educational system of Montenegro consists of:
Preschool upbringing and education: Nursery for the kids up to the age of 3 and preschool kids from the age of 3 to the age of 7.
1. Primary education - First cycle:
Grades: 1 - 4; Age 7 - 10; Duration 4 years.
2. Primary education - Second cycle:
Grades 5-8; Age 11-14; Duration 4 years.
3. Secondary education:
High (Grammar) School: Age 15-18; Duration 4 years.
Vocational Education: Age 15-18; Duration 4 years;
Vocational Education: Age 15-17; Duration 3 years.
4. University level education:
a) Duration 4 years; Age 19-22
b) Duration 5 years: Age 19-23
c) Duration 6 years; Age 19-24
Advanced schools:
Duration 2 years; Age 19-20
Postgraduate studies:
Advanced specialized training: age 23 and above; Duration 1-2 years.
Postgraduate studies: Age 23-25 / 24-26 / 25-27
There are no organized PhD studies. On completion of M.A. studies PhD thesis may be prepared.
