Bureau“We believe that it is important for us to acknowledge the advances that have been made both internally, domestically, and as Montenegro moves towards full membership in NATO, as well the candidate status of the European Union,” U.S. Congressman William Delahunt told the press after meeting with Foreign Minister Milan Rocen on Thursday.

He also reaffirmed the United States’ support to Montenegro’s EU bid.

“When visitors from Brussels and capitals in Europe visit with me in my capacity as Chairman of a committee that deals with the European portfolio, I and my colleagues constantly recommend to them that most serious consideration be given to Montenegro’s candidacy for the European Union.”

Referring to Montenegro’s policy of tolerance towards people of different ethnic, religious and national backgrounds, the U.S. Congressman described it as “a marvel to emulate, obviously not just in this region, but elsewhere in Europe and elsewhere in the globe”.

Congressman Delahunt, who is also the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe, is heading a U.S. Congress delegation on a visit to Montenegro.
