UNDP Administrator and UNDG Chair Helen Clark commends Montenegro’s achievements in meeting MDGs and pledges support

“I’m are very much aware of how important an objective for Montenegro accession to the membership of the European Union is and the UNDP has had rather a lot of experience with other accession countries and we are fully at the disposal of this country to support that process here” , Mrs Clark told a press conference after meeting with Foreign Minister Milan Rocen on Tuesday, September 7.

“I know that to become a member of the EU there are a lot of hoops to jump through, hurdles to climb over, but we are there to support you on that journey”, said Clark.

The UN official praised Montenegro for its commitment to cooperation with the UN and the progress made in meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

“I’d also like to thank the Government of Montenegro for being so enthusiastic about being a Delivering as One country.”

She also voiced confidence that Montenegro would meet all the goals set out in its medium-term report on the Millennium Development Goals, which is to be presented at a high-level UN summit on the MDGs later in New York later this year.

“Montenegro, confident, will achieve all goals. You have set MDG-plus goals and you will meet them.”

“I want to say how impressed we are with the progress you are making on so many fronts, including state independence four years ago and becoming the UN’s newest member state still.”

UNDP Administrator and UNDG Chair Helen Clark is making a two-day official visit to Montenegro, on 7 and 8 September.
