"9 May is important for Montenegro as a date that symbolizes the victory of mankind over fascism and the new hope given to Europeans by the formation of a community such as the EU," said Deputy Prime Minister Dritan Abazović on the occasion of 9 May, the Victory Over Fascism Day and Europe Day, which commemorates the end of World War II in Europe in 1945, and the beginnings of the creation of the European Union in 1950.

DPM Abazović emphasised that Montenegro, as the first country in Europe to raise an armed uprising against fascism on 13 July 1941, binds its present and future to Europe and the European Union.

"In the 21st century, anti-fascism is facing enormous challenges that are manifested in forms that are immanent to the modern age. Fascism today is most manifested through intolerance towards others, through denial of rights to vulnerable groups and historical revisionism. In that context, it is very important to nurture a culture of remembrance that must be anti-fascist," said Deputy Prime Minister Abazović.

Noting that, after membership in the NATO, Montenegro's only foreign policy vision is joining the European Union, DPM Abazović pointed out that our country sees the EU as a port of salvation, adding that after the first democratic change of government in Montenegro we are witnessing the highest support for EU membership from citizens of Montenegro.

"Let's walk down the path of reconciliation, progress and success bravely, in order to guarantee a stable future for our citizens. I am sure that our commitment to reforms and determination in European integration will soon be crowned by Montenegro's full membership in the EU. We sincerely support the entire region of the Western Balkans to take that path and to become part of the European family as soon as possible," DPM Abazović concluded.
