DPM Ivanović: We highly value Norway's support for Montenegro's economic development and European integration
Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović met today with State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway Maria Varteressian, who is paying a two-day visit to Montenegro as part of her tour of the Western Balkans.
During the discussion, both parties emphasised that bilateral relations between Montenegro and the Kingdom of Norway have been traditionally strong and friendly, with significant potential for enhancing cooperation in various areas of mutual interest and intensifying political dialogue between the two countries.
Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović expressed his gratitude to the Kingdom of Norway for its continuous support to Montenegro through development projects aimed at economic growth and European integration. He highlighted Montenegro's particular appreciation for Norway’s assistance in building transparent and democratic institutions, strengthening the rule of law and judiciary, areas where Norway has extensive experience and expertise.
Ivanović also underscored the excellent cooperation in defence, internal affairs, and police sectors, reiterating the need for continued Norwegian support in environmental protection. He also expressed hope for the renewal of long-standing cooperation with Norway regarding the “Dr. Simo Milošević” Institute in Igalo.
The Deputy Prime Minister further emphasised the expectation that economic cooperation between the two countries would be bolstered, particularly in areas of trade exchange and investment.
State Secretary Varteressian reaffirmed Norway's commitment to supporting Montenegro on its path toward EU membership.
Given our NATO alliance and shared goals of preserving security, prosperity, peace, and stability in Europe, the Kingdom of Norway is ready to assist Montenegro in becoming the next EU member, Varteressian stated.
Both officials agreed that the integration of all candidate countries, including those from the Western Balkans, represents a crucial step toward maintaining a stable and secure Europe.
Montenegro expects to be the next EU member state, Ivanović remarked.
The meeting also addressed the EU Growth Plan for the Western Balkans and the Western Balkans Investment Framework, which both sides acknowledged as vital tools for strengthening regional development and cooperation.
Opinions were also exchanged on current regional issues and challenges.
