Energy transition in focus: PM Spajić's meeting with German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck
During his official visit to Berlin, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić met with German Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck.
The discussion centered around energy transition, with Prime Minister Spajić emphasising its significance as a major opportunity for Montenegro.
As a Mediterranean country, we have ample sunshine, and significant investments are being made in wind farms. However, we also have great potential for the development of hydroelectric power plants. Alongside tourism, these will be the pillars of our economic development, highlighted the Prime Minister.
Vice Chancellor Habeck underscored one of Germany's priorities, which is increasing energy production from renewable sources.
Currently, around 50% of our energy comes from renewables, yet our energy demands are substantial. We are focused on developing our wind and solar potential, which also impacts the price of electricity, crucial for our economy, stated Habeck, adding, "We have collaborations with several countries in renewable energy production and can similarly assist you, facilitating partnerships with experienced companies."
The meeting also addressed the future of the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant, discussing sustainable ways to ensure energy sector stability from renewable sources, without coal utilization. It was noted that Germany faces a similar situation regarding reducing energy production from fossil fuels.
The significant support for Montenegro's European path was emphasised during the meeting.
The importance of the Berlin Process as a means of economic integration of the Western Balkans was underscored.
Geopolitical discussions touched on Russia's attempts to exert influence in the region through the media, which could be mitigated through a set of media laws expected to be adopted following consultations with the European Commission.
