During a meeting with Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, European Commissioner for Justice and candidate for Secretary General of the Council of Europe Didier Reynders praised the Montenegrin government's handling of the European integration process. Reynders highlighted the notable achievements in Chapters 23 and 24, emphasising the rapid creation of conditions for receiving the Interim Benchmark Assessment Report (IBAR).

Prime Minister Spajić underscored the importance of this week for Montenegro's European path. He noted that the election of top judiciary positions has reaffirmed the functionality of the parliamentary majority on key societal issues.

What is most important for our citizens and international partners is that this government delivers results. In just half a year, we have made significant strides to restore Montenegro's leading position in the EU accession process, said the Prime Minister.

Both parties agreed that IBAR is a testament to diligent work, and the continuous institutional communication between the European Commission and Montenegro demonstrates a strong mutual commitment to Montenegro becoming the 28th EU member state.

The observed progress in combating corruption and organised crime, along with the fulfillment of interim benchmarks in Chapters 23 and 24, reflects institutional and political maturity. It was concluded that this model should be applied to other areas crucial for further integration.

Reynders also briefed Prime Minister Spajić on his candidacy programme for Secretary General of the Council of Europe, stating that if elected, he would work towards greater presence in member states.

We want to be on the ground, to support development and address open issues where they exist. Council of Europe member states must cooperate more closely in all areas of common interest, Reynders said.
