Ibrahimović – Guterres: Montenegro-UN partnership contributes to overall societal development
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Ervin Ibrahimović met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Secretary-General Guterres inquired about current regional developments, emphasizing that the European integration process contributes to greater stability and prosperity in the Western Balkans. He also addressed the global challenges facing the world today, highlighting the importance of cooperation in promoting and safeguarding peace and human rights. He commended Montenegro as an active and reliable UN member, assuring that the country can count on full UN support in its development efforts.
Minister Ibrahimović expressed gratitude for the longstanding partnership between Montenegro and the UN system, which has significantly contributed to the democratization of Montenegrin society and the country’s overall development. He briefed the Secretary-General on key achievements in Montenegro’s foreign policy agenda, emphasizing that cooperation with the UN is complementary to the reforms undertaken within the European integration process.
Reflecting on the importance of regional cooperation and good neighborly relations for the EU integration of Western Balkan countries, Minister Ibrahimović reaffirmed Montenegro’s commitment to the principles of the UN Charter. He underscored that Montenegro’s multiethnic, multireligious, and multicultural identity is a fundamental value and a cornerstone of its society.
The two officials also exchanged views on current geopolitical challenges, agreeing that the UN plays a crucial role in upholding a rules-based international order.
