Montenegro signs Protocol No. 16 to the European Convention on Human Rights
By signing Protocol No. 16 to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and its soon ratification, Montenegro not only contributes to the effectiveness of the European Court's control mechanisms but also strengthens the established national system of human rights protection. The possibility for the highest national courts to turn to the European Court for advisory opinion is an important privilege of a member of the Council of Europe and an additional incentive for faster and more efficient protection of the rights of Montenegrin citizens protected by the Convention, said Bojan Božović, State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice and Minority Rights during the signing of Protocol No. 16 to the European Convention on Human Rights in Venice.
During the meeting with State Secretary Božović, Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić thanked Montenegro for signing this important protocol to the European Convention and encouraged its ratification in the Parliament of Montenegro as soon as possible.
State Secretary Božović is participating in a two-day Conference of Ministers of Justice of the Council of Europe, organised under the Italian presidency of the Council of Europe.
