PM Krivokapić's message on the occasion of Human Rights Day

Published on: Dec 10, 2021 9:45 AM Author: Office of the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić said that the international principles of respect for human rights and freedoms are imperative for all countries.

Universal human rights are the axiom from which all associations, organisations and states begin - People as the highest value and their rights and freedoms are inviolable.

Montenegrin history has been marked by events and epochs that have passed in the efforts and sacrifices of our ancestors to fight for the rights and freedoms that the UN General Assembly proclaimed in 1948 as the foundation on which every modern state must rest. Our generation and the future ones are obliged to preserve the heritage of human rights and freedoms, both because of the countless sacrifices on which they rest, and because of those who are yet to come and who, without protected, fundamental social values, cannot be bearers of civic honor, dignity and progress. In this regard, Montenegro has made additional commitments, as it is honored to be a member of the UN Human Rights Council.

The 42th Government of Montenegro was formed as a democratic response to decades-long one-party absolutism that endangered some of the basic human rights and freedoms of Montenegrin citizens. The last civil resistance to institutional violence, which was crowned by the parliamentary elections in August 2020, was the most dignified response to the pressure on human rights and freedoms in the history of Montenegro, and according to its results one of the most significant in this country.

The Government is doing everything, and will continue to do so, that the right to life, liberty and security of any citizen of Montenegro, the right to employment and social security, the right to participate in cultural life, personal freedom and protection from torture, inhuman treatment, freedom of opinion, expressions, beliefs or denominations, shall never again be called into question by any negligent omission or by any malicious act. By protecting human rights and freedoms, we are preserving the Constitution and the sovereignty of our Montenegro and the values of European civilisation, Prime Minister Krivokapić said on the occasion of the Human Rights Day.
