Spajić: Freedom of the press essential for democracy
Prime Minister Milojko Spajić extended his congratulations on 3 May, World Press Freedom Day, emphasising the importance of respecting media freedoms, dignity, and independence of those "who work, investigate, question, and inform in the public interest for the benefit of all citizens."
The Prime Minister highlighted the Government's commitment to establishing a favourable social environment and legislative framework that will enable and guarantee journalists to operate freely, thereby making a full contribution to general development and fulfilling their mission of social responsibility.
Grateful to all who value the spoken word, appreciate its power and worth, and diligently and courageously perform journalistic work, I extend congratulations on World Press Freedom Day, concludes the message.
During a visit to Berlin, the Prime Minister participated as a guest at Medien Camp, where he held an informal panel discussion with hundreds of journalists.
On that occasion, Prime Minister Spajić emphasised that without full press freedom, there is no true democracy, but everyone faces a challenging task in the fight against disinformation. In this context, he underscored the importance of proper education and adherence to a code of ethics, through which journalists earn the title of guardians of democracy.
Strengthening the rule of law is crucial and at the center of all reform processes. In this regard, journalists play an extremely important role by pointing out all shortcomings and thus contributing to the improvement of the system, which will ultimately work for the benefit of all citizens, Spajić concluded.
