Spanish Prime Minister: Spajić's policies are leading Montenegro to the EU
The time has come for Montenegro to become the 28th member of the European Union, and the policies of Prime Minister Spajić are steering the country in that direction, stated Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez during his meeting with Prime Minister Milojko Spajić on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Washington.
During the discussion, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of Montenegro's EU membership and thanked Spain for its support over the past seven months. He highlighted that receiving IBAR is as crucial for Montenegro as it is for the European Union itself, expressing his expectation that the final phase of the negotiation process will contribute to Montenegro's full transformation into a mature and economically strengthened member state.
The Spanish Prime Minister praised the "remarkable progress of Montenegro," noting that by joining NATO, achieving over 2% of GDP in defence spending, and consistently implementing Alliance policies across all sectors, Montenegro has demonstrated that it is "a country the European Union can count on." He asserted that the time has come for the European Union to gain its 28th member state.
Both Prime Ministers agreed that Montenegro and Spain's relations need new momentum, emphasising the need to intensify economic dialogue in the coming period. In this regard, it was agreed that as two Mediterranean countries, Montenegro and Spain would enhance cooperation in tourism and hospitality. Prime Minister Sánchez also conveyed the interest of Spanish companies in projects in Montenegro.
The leaders expressed their satisfaction with participating in the historic NATO Summit in Washington and reaffirmed their commitment to continue contributing to the goals of the world's most powerful defence alliance.
