Montenegro and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are successfully cooperating in the field of integrated border management, the fight against illegal migration, organized and cross-border crime, thus contributing to a higher level of security in the Western Balkans region and beyond. That was assessed on the meeting of the Minister of European Affairs, Maida Gorčević, and the head of the Mission of the International Organization for Migration in Montenegro, Vladimir Gjorgjiev.

Minister Gorčević thanked the IOM for its support in the implementation of reforms in the area of the rule of law, both in terms of improving the strategic and legislative framework and strengthening administrative capacities, as well as in the implementation of specific activities in the area of migration.

“The Government of Montenegro is fully committed to cooperation with European and international partners in the fight against illegal migration. For us, this area is very important because it represents part of the obligations within the key negotiation chapters 23 and 24”, said Gorčević.

Gjorgjiev pointed out the importance of previous and current projects that contribute to strengthening the capacity of Montenegrin institutions in terms of migration policy and integrated border management. In this context, he pointed out the importance of cooperation with international and local experts.

“IOM supports the accession of Montenegro to the EU. In this context, you can count on our further support, especially in the implementation of reforms from Chapter 24 – Justice, Freedom and Security”, said Gjorgjiev.
