Through commitment to the rule of law, Montenegro wants to strengthen democratic legacies
Head of Montenegrin Diplomacy Đorđe Radulović met in Vilnius with Thomas Garett, Secretary General of the Community of Democracies. During their meeting, they assessed that this year’s “Future of Democracy” Conference which Minister Radulović attends at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, presents a good platform for exchanging opinions regarding the condition of democracy around the world.
Minister Radulović stated that our country, just as the entire region which it is a part of, does not have a long democratic tradition, thus the process of transition and consolidation of Western Balkan states is still ongoing. In that context, he emphasized that through its participation, Montenegro confirms commitment to its fundamental postulates, rule of law and human rights, and that our society invests a lot of efforts in their strengthening.
Garett pointed out that the Community of Democracies is ready to cooperate with Montenegro in promoting and spreading democratic ideas. In that sense, he invited Montenegro to become a member of the Governing Council of the Community, and additionally contributes to the work of the organization in that way. Also, Garett thanked Minister Radulović for his participation at the 10th Ministerial Conference of the Community of Democracies, which was held in September of this year.
Montenegro’s commitment to democratic values, as well as efforts in accelerating our path towards the EU, is proven by the key principles of our foreign policy – NATO membership, European integration and regional cooperation. In this context, Montenegro continuously promotes and applies European values, fight against organized crime and corruption, continuing internal reforms with the goal to reach EU standards.
Additionally, Minister Radulović concluded that our country’s Government wants better participation of the civil society in the political life, which will open new ideas and possibilities for mutual contribution to strengthening the entire democratic environment in the country.
