Unfair treatment of Montenegro and its citizens must stop

Published on: Sep 11, 2021 1:30 PM Author: Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Our attitude, stated previously on several occasions, was once again repeated during talks with Serbian Embassy’s Charge d’Affairs Oliver Stamenković, this time regarding the unfair treatment of Montenegrin PM Zdravko Krivokapić’s son by Serbian police.

After inconveniences experienced by PM Krivokapić’s daugthers, who already once left Belgrade due to security reasons, his son, who is a person protected by Montenegrin Police Department, was searched by Serbian police officers who even drew weapons, in an extremely rough way, justifying this by stating that they just followed orders.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is once again expressing concern and sending appeals to Authorities of Serbia, whom we consider to be a friendly country, to immediately stop with these actions.

After Serbia’s Ministry of Interior statement that harassment accounts were false, and that officers acted professionally and in accordance with the law, we wish to believe that this was just a “necessary check”, as it was stated.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses hope that state authorities of Serbia will present sincere and true will for these actions to stop happening, so that we can have full trust in one another.

We wish to believe that citizens of both counties, whether they are members of Parliament, or protected figures, can be guaranteed same treatment and full respect, unless there is reason for acting otherwise. We are strongly convinced that citizens of both countries deserve this, as they believe in friendship and have best intentions.

Communication with Serbian authorities from our side will, of course, be continued, in good faith that last night’s event was a big oversight and not another unfair treatment of our citizens, or a message to our Government or Prime Minister.
