Podgorica, Montenegro (20 July 2012) – The United States will continue to provide strong support for Montenegro’s European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations, because in addition to the results the country has made, there is also a strong and sustained political will in that regard, US Ambaasador Sue K. Brown said at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice and Human Rights Duško Marković earlier today. She congratulated Montenegro on the positive outcome of the Chicago NATO Summit and on the opening of accession negotiations with the EU.
DPM Marković and Ambassador Brown agreed that the cooperation between the two governments is at a high level. In that regard, they reffered to the latest evidence of the cooperation such as the implementation of the Interstate Agreement on Implementing Laws and the results of the conference titled “Models of Legislation for Combating Organised Crime”, which took place in Budva in March 2012.
In this context, the meeting discussed the possibility of extending the Interstate Agreement on Implementing Laws between Montenegro and the USA. The agreement, that the two governments signed in 2011, resulted in considerable progress in strengthening rule of law in Montenegro and in empowering institutional and human resources capacities in fighting against crime and corruption.
The meeting also discussed the results made in fighting against organised crime and corruption. The two officials paid particular attention to the performance of the Special Investigative Team, which, as they agreed, achieved remarkable results in a short period of time since it was established.
