MILO ĐUKANOVIĆ, PRIME MINISTER OF MONTENEGRO:

(Welcome speech at the opening ceremony of the underground bauxite mining "Biočki stan", Nikšić, 24 September 2016)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I want to welcome you on behalf of the Government of Montenegro and to share the pleasure with you that today – on the Miners' Day and the 68th anniversary of the founding of Bauxite Mines Nikšić – after 10 years we are renewing the exploitation of red bauxite in mining "Biočki stan".

This is one of the promising economic activities that will make a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of Nikšić and Montenegro. Investment worth 13 million euros in the reconstruction and modernisation of all the facilities the Bauxite Mine, with planned production of one million tons per year, will impact on the increase in industrial production and overall exports. It will certainly mean their greater participation in the GDP. Let me remind you that only in the cave "Biočki stan", Uniprom metali d.o.o. with its Polish partner company Bumex, plans to produce about three million tons of ore in the next five years. This is around 40% of currently certified reserves at this deposit. Also, since it restarted production of bauxite at surface minings "Zagrad" and "Đurakov do", by 1 September 2016, this company produced 370,000 tons of ore and exported it through the Port of Bar. It is expected that the exploitation of bauxite from the mining "Biočki stan", as well as already started production in the aforementioned reconstructed surface minings, have wider multiplier effect on Montenegrin economy, creating new opportunities for the business of other companies in Montenegro. Not only for the companies directly engaged in the production of ore, but also for the companies such as Monte Cargo, the Port of Bar and others in the service sector.

I want especially to promote the fact that with this investment Uniprom metali d.o.o., as a socially responsible company, contributed significantly to the improvement of infrastructure, local roads and water supply in Župa nikšićka. This is an important prerequisite for improving living and social standards in this part of the municipality of Nikšić. And what is most important – putting exploitation cave "Biočki stan" into reoperation will create new jobs, particularly for the residents of parish villages. The fact that it is planned to employ about 150 people in the underground mining by the end of the year is satisfying.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I am convinced that the renewal of the production of red bauxite created one real chance for a bigger valorisation of local resources aimed at increasing the overall production and exports and an employment increase in our country.

I congratulate company Uniprom metali d.o.o on this venture and the respectable anniversary - a quarter century of business. At the same time I congratulate the miners on the holiday. I would like once again to encourage all new entrepreneurial and investment initiatives in the industrial sector. The Government will continue to actively and constructively contribute to the improvement of the business environment to increase domestic and foreign investments, the most important fundamentals of a dynamic and sustainable economic growth and development.

I wish you every success in your future work!

Good luck!
