PODGORICA, November 24th, 2017 - On the occasion of tomorrow’s International Day to End Violence against Women, the OSCE Mission to Montenegro and the Montenegrin Ministry for Human and Minority Rights issued a joint statement condemning all instances of gender-based violence:

Violence against women remains one of the most serious human rights violations in the world today.

Gender-based violence is unacceptable.

Gender-based violence is not inevitable.

Gender-based violence can be prevented.

The OSCE Mission and the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights recognize the interconnections between ensuring greater gender equality, reducing violence against women and achieving security for all citizens.

That is why the fight against gender based violence and support to equal opportunities initiatives cannot be an incidental or temporary issue.

The fight against gender-based violence requires a comprehensive and all-pervasive effort involving all relevant stakeholders.

Since Montenegro first joined this global initiative in 2007, the OSCE Mission has supported Montenegro highlighting these efforts in public in co-ordination with Ministry for Human and Minority Rights. As partners, we will continue to promote and maintain campaigns in fighting this social problem.

Relevant institutions must deal with gender-based violence more efficiently on a daily basis not just during the campaigns.
